Room by Room — A Sensory Walkthrough
Walk your child's room with fresh eyes, find the things that have been asking too much of them all along, and change one at a time.
A room is never neutral. It makes requests of your child's nervous system every minute they're in it — the overhead light, the hum from the vent, the open shelf of toys in their line of sight. A child already working hard to manage a day has less left over to absorb all of it.
This is the walkthrough. You carry it into the room and come out with a plan.
What's inside
- A two-part room audit — tick what's true across light, sound, smell, clutter, touch, movement, heavy input and retreat. Where the ticks gather is where to start.
- "What my child is telling me" — nine behaviors most parents have noticed, what each one might mean about the room, and what to try first
- A swap list — cheapest first, with most of the good ones free
- Things you can do this afternoon — ten changes that cost nothing and undo in a minute
- A floor plan planner — sketch the room, mark four zones
- Two children, one room — because most rooms are shared
- A one-week plan — change one thing, write down what happened
Sleeps on the floor. Plays in the hallway. Takes toys into the closet.
These usually get read as odd, or as defiance. More often they're a child telling you something about the room they haven't got the words for — and once you can read them, they're the most useful information you have.
You don't need to buy anything
Most of what helps here is subtraction, not purchase. There's a full page of changes that cost nothing, and the guide tells you to work through those before you spend a cent.
